Wednesday, 01/07/04 Fitness, weight-loss centers get set By NANCY DEVILLE Rob Ferguson has seen many people make and break New Year's resolutions. After years in the health club industry, Ferguson, general manager of the World Gym in Goodlettsville, has already predicted what's coming in the days ahead. ''This time of year is generally our busiest time, and it's due to people setting New Year's resolutions,'' he said. ''People are lot more health-conscious now than they were about five years ago, and because of that we have seen quite an increase in new memberships this year.'' While local retail stores are getting a break from the holiday rush, health clubs and weight-loss centers are geared up for the flock of people determined to lose weight or get in shape. Catherine Weir decided to start early. She has been working with a trainer at the Goodlettsville World Gym for the past nine weeks. After losing 24 pounds and 6% of her body fat and reducing her dress size, she hopes to lose an additional 10 more pounds. ''I gained 15 pounds with my last trainer,'' said Weir, 22. ''But this time I wanted to get with someone that would help me lose weight. Now I work out three days a week, eat more often and drink lots of water.'' Weir's personal trainer, Anthony Lake, recommends that everyone who is joining a health club for the first time hire a professional to learn how to exercise properly. ''People need to know how to set the exercise machines so they fit their body,'' he said. ''They should also be very consistent for the first three to four weeks, so it becomes part of their schedule. ''Once people start seeing results, it motivates them to come back. I don't want any of my clients' clothes to fit. I want them to buy a new wardrobe.'' Fitness centers aren't the only ones feeling the crunch, as potential dieters have bombarded local bookstores for the latest diet releases. ''The South Beach Diet and the Diet for Life have been the hottest sellers this year,'' said Joe Phillips, manager of Madison's Books-A-Million. ''Both of those have outsold the Dr. Phil books. These type of self-help books have been the most popular books sold this year, because we all want to be skinny and cute.'' About 25% to 30% of new health-club members will become sidetracked and fade off, Ferguson said. ''During the summer months, with work and time restrictions, people don't have as much free time. But it usually steps back up in September as the kids go back to school. ''Everybody can reach their goals with 45 minutes three days a week. Exercise is very simple, while everybody thinks it's hard. It's important that you have fun — if you can't find a way to have fun, you won't stick with it.'' Five steps to keeping weight-loss resolution Weight Watchers lists five steps to keeping a New Year's resolution. Step 1: Make your resolutions public. Share them with one or more people so they can help you stay on track. Step 2: Write down your resolution and the steps you will take to keep it. Step 3: Keep things simple. Break a big goal into a series of smaller goals. Want to lose 50 pounds? Then shoot for losing 10% of your body weight first or set five 10-pound incremental weight loss goals. Step 4: Each time you make a small lifestyle change aimed at reaching your goal, put a star on your calendar to mark your achievement. Step 5: Make small changes. If weight loss or a healthier lifestyle is your goal, put a bowl of fruit or vegetable pieces front and center in the refrigerator and hide the cookie jar behind the oatmeal. Each week, try a new low-fat cereal or an exotic fruit or a vegetable you haven't tasted before. Stash away your car keys for a weekend and challenge yourself to walk wherever you need to go.
